Plugin instruments overview

A plugin track plays a software instrument: your track’s MIDI goes in and the plugin makes the sound. This chapter takes the eight instruments in the manual’s plugin appendix one tab at a time, so you can see what each control does and the range it covers.

You don’t need the paid Pro Pack for this chapter. The manual lists none of these eight as Pro Pack plugins. The one chapter that does need it is The Pro Pack, at the end of the guide, which also covers the instrument the manual ties to it, AIR Fabric Select. Plugins you buy separately aren’t covered at all: the manual points you to each plugin’s own user guide.

Load a plugin on a new track

  1. Go to Main Mode and tap + New Track, at the bottom-left of the screen.
  2. Select Plugin in the window that appears. The new track is added after your existing tracks.
  3. The Plugin field brings up the Plugin window. Type and Manufacturer sort the list by kind of plugin or by maker.
  4. Tap Select to load the highlighted plugin, or Close to back out.
  5. Use the Preset field to pick a sound from the plugin you just loaded.

Edit the sound

  1. With the plugin track selected, press TRACK EDIT | TRACK SETTING to open Track Edit Mode.
  2. Move between groups of parameters with the tabs along the bottom of the screen. Depending on the plugin, you get a slider for each parameter or a picture of the plugin’s own interface.
  3. The folder icon beside the preset name, at the top of the screen, opens the file browser so you can load a preset.
  4. The disk icon beside the insert selector saves your sound as a new preset.

Each panel in the sections that follow is one of those tabs. The small word under a parameter’s name is the group it sits in on the screen, which tells apart two controls with the same name, such as the Attack of a filter envelope and of an amp envelope.

Good to know

  • To change the plugin or preset on an existing track, open its Track Settings (Plugin tracks).
  • Default Plugin Synth in Menu > Preferences > Project Defaults chooses the instrument a new plugin track starts with (Preferences: Project Defaults and Project Load/Save).
  • Akai’s FAQ says the G2 can run 32 instances of virtual instrument plugins at once, and elsewhere lists up to 32 plugin programs. The manual gives no overall figure, but it does allow only one DrumSynth:Multi per project (DrumSynth).
  • Q-Link macros can reach the parameters of the plugin on the track (Learning macro assignments).
  • The Auto Sampler can capture a plugin preset and convert it (Auto Sampler).

13.4IntermediateManual Hype p.427

Hype

Hype is AIR’s modern dual-oscillator synth. It’s built for fast results: the Macro tab puts six preset-specific controls next to one-knob amounts for the filter and the main effects, so you can reshape a preset without digging. When you want more, the other tabs open up the envelopes, the effects themselves and the MIDI control.

The five tabs

  • Macro — the macros, plus quick amounts for the filter and effects, and the main volume.
  • Filter / Amp — the filter and amplitude envelopes.
  • Effects 1 — the LFO, and the Mod, Distortion and Hype effects.

13.6IntermediateManual DrumSynth p.439

DrumSynth

DrumSynth is a family of AIR plugins modelled on classic drum machines, using several synthesis types and built-in effects to make modern drum sounds. You can use it two ways: one plugin per track for each drum you want, or DrumSynth:Multi, which gives you all the sounds from a single plugin.

As individual plugins, the drum types are Clap, Crash, HiHat, Kick, Perc, Ride, Snare and Tom. They all share the same three tabs. The manual calls the first one Drum Sound, and on the screen it carries the drum’s name, such as Clap; the other two are Trans/Dist and EQ/Comp. The first tab has up to eight extra knobs chosen for that particular sound, so what they do changes with the drum you load.

To switch the built-in Transient, Distortion, EQ and Compressor effects on or off from any tab, tap the buttons on the right of the touchscreen under FX.

PLUGIN · DrumSynth: Drum SoundOn a DrumSynth plugin track: TRACK EDIT | TRACK SETTING, then tap the first tab, named after the drum. In DrumSynth:Multi, cycle tabs 1–8 to this view.

  • The 1–8 icons mute and unmute each drum.
  • The S icon solos a drum.
  • Drag a pan slider to set that drum’s panning, or tap the slider and turn DATA DIAL. A Q-Link knob also works when the Q-Links are in Screen mode (The Q-Link knobs).
  • Drag a volume slider to set that drum’s level, or use the same dial and Q-Link routes.

FX view

  • Tap an FX box to switch that effect on or off for that drum. Each drum has Transient, Distortion, EQ and Compressor.

Sends view

  • Drag a Send knob to set how much of a drum goes to the Delay, Diffuser or Reverb send effect, or tap the knob and use the same dial and Q-Link routes.
13.7IntermediateManual Mellotron p.443

Mellotron

Mellotron is AIR’s software version of the classic tape keyboard, including copies of the original tape samples in clean and dirty versions. The Model tab picks the tape and how worn it sounds, down to the noise the keys make. The other two tabs add colour and space.

Each effect has its own on/off button: the buttons on the right of the screen, or the one at the top right of the effect’s section.

The three tabs

  • Model — the tape sample and how it plays.
  • Flavor / Compressor / EQ — tone colouring, compression and a four-band EQ.
  • Delay / Spring Reverb — the built-in delay and spring reverb.

13.8IntermediateManual Solina p.446

Solina

Solina is AIR’s software version of the classic string synthesizer. You build the sound from six voices — Contra Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin, Trumpet and Horn — each with its own level, panning and octave, then run them through the ensemble effect.

Dual decides how the bass and upper voices share the keyboard. On, both play on every key whatever the octave. Off, they split, so the bass voices play in the lower octaves and the upper voices in the higher ones.

The five tabs

  • Ensemble — the voices, the ensemble effect and the levels.
  • Sound — how notes start and end, plus tone, ageing and vibrato.
  • Flavor — tone colouring, vinyl noise, flutter and stereo spread.
  • Chorus / EQ and Delay / Spring Reverb — the built-in effects, each with an on/off button on the right of the screen.

13.9AdvancedManual WayOutWare Odyssey p.449

WayOutWare Odyssey

WayOutWare Odyssey is a software recreation of the classic analogue Odyssey synth, using WayOutWare’s circuit modelling and signal processing to capture the character of the original. It has two voltage-controlled oscillators, an audio mixer, a voltage-controlled filter, a high-pass filter and a voltage-controlled amplifier, with an LFO, a sample and hold generator and two envelope generators for modulation.

Many values are shown in volts. That’s how the plugin displays these controls, so don’t be surprised to see V next to Coarse, Fine, VCF Cutoff or the ADSR’s Sustain.

The five tabs

  • VCO 1/2 — the two oscillators, with frequency modulation and pulse width modulation for each.
  • Mod/Env — the LFO, the Sample/Hold section, and the AR and ADSR envelope generators.
  • Mix/Filter — the audio mixer, the filters and the VC Amp.
  • Echo — the tape echo effect.
