Grid View

Grid View is the close-up editor for one track at a time. It lays out the track’s note events or audio regions against time, along with their velocities, so you can fix what you played by hand rather than record it again.

Grid View with audio tracks

On an audio track, Grid View shows the waveform and lets you work on the regions inside it. Seven tool icons at the top of the screen change what a touch does. Most tools care about which part of a region you touch: upper, middle or lower third.

The seven tools

ToolModeWhat it does
MarqueeMarquee ModeTap the upper third to select. Drag the upper third to move. Drag the lower third to shorten or lengthen. To split at two points, drag across the middle third to make a translucent white box, then tap the upper third of the box; you get a region on either side and one between.
ArrowSelection ModeTap to select. Drag the upper third to move. Drag the lower third to shorten or lengthen.
PencilDraw ModeOpen the velocity/automation lane and tap and drag to draw automation (Velocity and automation lane).
EraserErase ModeTap to erase a region.
ScissorsSplit ModeTap a point to split there, leaving a region on either side. Tap a region’s left-most edge to select it.
MuteMute ModeTap to mute or unmute a region.
Magnifying GlassNavigation ModeDrag to move to another part of the sample. Spread or pinch to zoom in or out, vertically, horizontally or both at once.

Moving, resizing, erasing and muting all work on several selected regions at once as well as on one.

Key combinations

SHIFT + tap Copy
Copies the selected region. Turn DATA DIAL to move the highlighted region, then press the dial to paste it there.Grid View, audio track
SHIFT + tap Cut
Cuts the selected region. Turn DATA DIAL to move the highlighted region, then press the dial to paste it there.Grid View, audio track

Whichever tool is active, you can edit the selected region with the controls below. Tap the arrow icon and tap a region to select it, and all of its parameters become available. UNDO | REDO and SHIFT + UNDO | REDO step back and forward through your edits (Data entry and undo).

Editing the selected region

ControlWhat it does
NudgeTap, then use DATA DIAL or – and + to shift the region left or right. It moves in steps of the Timing Correct value by default. With the arrow or marquee tool, you can also drag the upper third.
Don’t SnapTap this in the lower-left corner to nudge free of the grid. Each nudge is then four ticks.
Edit StartTap, then use DATA DIAL or – and + to adjust the start or end point without changing the region’s position.
SplitSplits the region at the playhead, leaving a region on either side.
DuplicatePlaces a copy immediately after the original.
Fade In, Fade OutCreate a fade, drawn as a slope at the start or end of the region.
LevelSets the region’s level. The waveform’s height changes to match.
ReverseReverses the region.
MuteMutes the region.

Warp: change a region’s length without changing its pitch

Warp
Turns warping on and enables the Semi, Fine and BPM fields beside it.
BPM
Enter a tempo by hand, and the region’s length changes to suit.
Detect BPM
Opens the Edit BPM window: type a value in BPM, tap Detect to have the MPC work it out, or tap Tap Tempo at the bottom of the screen at the rate you want. Tap Close, the X or outside the window to close it.
Semi, Fine
Change the pitch, which is handy when two samples at different pitches need to last the same time.
Algorithm
The warp algorithm for this sample. Repitch adjusts the pitch to bring the sample into line with the MPC tempo. The field starts on whatever Default Audio Warp Algorithm is set to in Menu > Preferences > Audio/Export, and changing it here overrides that.Range Pro Ten, Repitch

Recorded audio files carry the project tempo of the moment, saved inside the sample. Warping compares that tempo with the BPM field to work out how far to stretch. You can also set up audio track recording so the resulting region is warped automatically (Preferences: General), and the MPC Pro Pack adds a Super algorithm (Super Warp algorithm).

Clear
Clears the audio from the track.
Double Length with Events
Doubles the length of the track, audio samples included.
Flatten
With transport stopped, bakes all edits and regions in the arrangement into one new audio file.
Flatten Elastique
The same as Flatten, using the Elastique Pro algorithm for time-stretching and pitch-shifting, which gives higher quality with fewer artefacts than the standard algorithm.
Bounce to Sample
Exports the audio regions to a new sample in the project’s sample pool.
Bounce to Audio Track
Exports the audio regions to a new audio track in the project.
Audio Tail
Extra seconds added at the end of the files this creates.

7.4IntermediateManual Velocity/Automation Lane p.176

Velocity and automation lane

The lane below the grid shows one thing at a time: note velocities, or the values of an automation parameter. It is the visual way to shape dynamics and to draw in the automation you would otherwise record live (Automation).

Show or hide the lane

  • Tap the up arrow (∧) in the lower-right corner to show it.
  • Tap the down arrow (∨) to hide it.

Reading the bars

What you seeWhat it means
A vertical bar per noteThat note’s velocity. Higher and redder means a higher velocity; yellow means a lower one.
A grey line on top of a barThe note is currently selected.
Blue bars, with Probability showingThe chance that the note will play.
Blue bars, with Ratchet showingThe ratchet subdivisions for the selected notes, drawn as dotted lines on the original note.

To change the velocity of selected notes, tap Velocity at the bottom of the screen, then use DATA DIAL or – and +.

Add an automation parameter

  1. Select a MIDI or audio track and open Grid View (Grid View).
  2. Tap the up arrow on the parameter bar to expand the lane.
  3. Double-tap the parameter field to open the Parameter menu. It shows Velocity by default on MIDI tracks and TRK: Volume on audio tracks.
  4. Tap Add New and choose a parameter. The choices depend on the track type, the insert effects you have added and other options.

Edit automation

  • Draw it with the pencil tool.
  • Erase points with the eraser tool. Erasing every point removes the parameter.
  • Tap the trash can icon to delete all automation for the selected parameter in one go.
7.5BasicsManual Step Sequencer p.177, Step Sequencer p.26

Step Sequencer

The Step Sequencer turns the pads into step buttons, like a traditional drum machine: choose a sound and a bar, and each pad becomes a step in that bar. It works on MIDI tracks only, not audio tracks, and it can also sequence automation (Step automation).

Key combinations

SHIFT + GRID EDIT | STEP SEQ
Opens the Step Sequencer.
PAD
Enters a note on an unlit step, or deletes the note from a lit step.Step Sequencer
SHIFT + PAD
Selects that pad as the sound to sequence.Step Sequencer
SHIFT + tap Track –/+
Selects the track to sequence on.Step Sequencer
SHIFT + tap Clear
Clears all steps in the current sequence.Step Sequencer
SHIFT + tap Clear Page
Clears all steps in the current page view.Step Sequencer

You can also press MENU | PREFS and tap Step Sequencer.

Enter a pattern

  1. Choose the sound with Pad –/+ at the bottom of the screen, or with SHIFT + PAD. The current pad number shows in the upper-left corner.
  2. Choose the bar with Bar –/+. The current bar number also shows in the upper-left corner.
  3. Press PLAY if you want to hear it as you go. The current step is marked in green.
  4. Press an unlit pad, or tap an unlit step marker on the screen, to enter a note. The pad lights in a colour that reflects its velocity, and a velocity bar appears on the screen.
  5. Press a lit pad to delete that note.

Pad Sel: another way to pick the sound

  • Tap and hold Pad Sel, press the pad you want, then let go of Pad Sel.
  • Or latch it: tap Pad Sel to turn it on, press the pad, then tap Pad Sel again to turn it off.

Top of the screen

Track
Shows the name of the current track.
Track Length
How long the track is. With the SEQ button on, it follows the sequence length. With SEQ off, set an exact length with the Bars:Beats:Ticks values. This lets tracks have different lengths, such as a 1-bar drum part looping under a 4-bar bass line.
BPM
The tempo (Tempo).
Seq/Gbl
Whether the sequence follows its own tempo (Seq) or the global tempo (Gbl). SHIFT + TAP TEMPO | GLOBAL does the same.

Configuration window (gear icon)

Velocity
The default velocity of steps entered from the pads or the step buttons on the screen.
Step Size
How many steps each bar has. T marks a triplet value. Changing it also changes the current Timing Correct value.
Auto-Scroll
Off keeps the grid still; Page jumps a page at a time as the audio playhead advances.Range Off, Page
Automation
Whether step automation is free of the grid or locked. When Locked to Step Length, automation changes affect only the current step (Step automation).Range Unlocked, Locked to Step Length

Tap TC at the bottom of the screen to open the Timing Correct window (Timing Correct).

Change the velocity of steps

  • Tap anywhere on a step’s velocity bar, and the top of the bar jumps there.
  • Use the slider on the right edge of the screen to raise or lower all steps.
  • Turn the Q-Link knob for that step, with Q-LINKS in Screen mode. Setting a value of 0 (Off) deletes the step.

Reshape the pattern

ControlWhat it does
Nudge <, Nudge >Shift the whole pattern left or right by one step, which is handy for trying out rhythmic permutations.
Flip StepsSwaps full and empty steps. Empty steps get notes at full velocity (127), and steps with notes become empty.
PresetsShows or hides five buttons that transform the velocities of the current bar (see below).

The five preset buttons

ButtonEach tap moves on to the next of these
FirstVelocities rise to one peak at the end of the bar, then two peaks (one after each half), then four peaks (one after each quarter). They then fall from one peak at the start of the bar, then from two peaks, then from four peaks.
SecondVelocities are set to either 1 or 127 by position. First half 1 and second half 127; odd quarters 1 and even quarters 127; odd eighths 1 and even eighths 127. Then the same three again, the other way round.
ThirdVelocities rise to a peak and fall back, across the whole bar, then in each half, then in each quarter. They then fall to a valley and rise back, across the whole bar, then in each half, then in each quarter.
FourthSwaps the first and second halves of the bar.
FifthInverts the velocity of every step with a note, so old and new add up to 127: 40 becomes 87, and 75 becomes 52. The exceptions are 127 and 1, which swap with each other, because a step with a note can’t have a velocity of 0.

Step automation

The Step Sequencer can hold automation values as well as notes, so each step can carry its own setting for a parameter. The Q-Links make this feel like a knob-based step sequencer.

Add a parameter

  1. Double-tap the Parameter field. It shows Velocity by default on MIDI tracks and TRK: Volume on audio tracks.
  2. Tap Add New and choose a parameter. The choices depend on the track type, the insert effects you have added and other options.

Other ways to edit

  • Tap and drag in the step area to draw values freely.
  • Turn Q-LINKS in Screen Mode. The current value shows next to the Parameter field as you adjust it.
  • Use Nudge < and Nudge > to slide the current parameter sideways, in steps of the Timing Correct value.
  • Use the slider on the right to push every automation step you can see up or down.
  • Tap Presets and use the buttons to apply the presets to the automation (Step Sequencer).

FilterCutoff, Resonance, Filter Envelope Amount
EnvelopeAttack, Decay, Release
SampleSample Layer, Sample Slice
TuningCoarse Tuning, Fine Tuning
MixPan, Level

Modifier playback modes

Absolute
The note uses the value stored in the note event, ignoring anything set in Track Edit, Sample Edit or Pad Mixer, and ignoring pad automation that would affect it.
Relative
The note uses the value as an offset from the current state (or as a scale, for Level), so settings in Track Edit, Sample Edit and Pad Mixer and pad automation all still count. The modifier can go beyond the limit of the underlying value: a pad with an Envelope Attack of 10 and a modifier of -100 plays with an Attack of 0.

These settings save with the project. Tap Make Default to use the current setup for all new projects; the Reset Preferences function in the Preferences menu puts it back (Preferences: Info and Activations).
