Play back your patterns

A pattern is a record of which samples played and when, stored on a pad. It holds performance data rather than audio, which is why you bounce or resample it when you need an actual sample (Turn a pattern into a sample).

Press PATTERN SELECT and the pads stop playing samples and start calling up patterns instead. This guide calls that pattern mode.

Start and stop a pattern

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT. The screen reads SELECT and shows the pattern’s BPM, and every pad holding a pattern turns purple.
  2. Press a purple pad. The pattern starts and its pad lights white.
  3. To stop, press the white pad again or press EXIT.

Moving between patterns

  • Queue the next one: press another pad while a pattern plays. It waits in standby and takes over when the current pattern reaches its end.
  • Change straight away: hold SUB PAD and press a pad.
  • Select without hearing it: hold VALUE and press a pad. The pattern is selected but stays silent.

Introducing the Roland SP-404MKII Creative Sampler and Effector

RolandChannel

Roland’s own 13-minute tour of the hardware, sampling, bus effects, patterns and DJ mode. It dates from the 2021 launch, so there’s no TR-REC, looper or side chain yet.

9.2Basics

Record a pattern as you play

Real-time recording keeps what you play on the pads, timing and all. Because it loops over the length you set, you can build a beat in passes: kick first, then snare, then whatever goes on top. Reach for it when the feel of your playing matters.

Record a new pattern

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  2. Press REC. Every pad without a pattern blinks red.
  3. Press a blinking pad to choose where the pattern goes. The 404 goes into standby and opens the RECORD SETTING screen.
  4. Look at the mode shown on the screen and press REMAIN if it doesn’t read Real-Time. The button stays lit for Real-Time and blinks for TR-REC.
  5. Set the tempo, length and timing options listed below.
  6. Press REC and play. The pattern loops at the length you chose, and each pass adds to what’s there instead of replacing it.
  7. Press EXIT when you’re done. Recording ends and the pattern saves itself to the pad, while playback carries on.
  8. Press EXIT again to stop playback.

While you’re recording

  • Rehearse: press REC. The pattern keeps looping but nothing you play is kept, so you can practise the part. Press REC again to go back to recording.
  • Undo: press SHIFT + PATTERN SELECT to take back what you just recorded, which is the quick fix for a badly timed take.
  • Erase as it plays: press DEL for erase mode, then hold a pad. That pad’s notes are wiped for as long as you keep holding it. Press DEL again to leave erase mode.
  • Check the settings: press RECORD SETTING, in rehearsal too, then EXIT to come back. LENGTH can’t be changed at this stage, so decide it before you start.
  • Play from outside: note messages arriving at the MIDI IN connector or the USB port get recorded as well. See Connect MIDI gear and sync tempo.

To add to a pattern you’ve already made, press REC while it plays. Recording doesn’t pick up from wherever the pattern happens to be: it waits for the start of the pattern, and the screen shows Wait for REC until then.

Get a count-in and a click

A count-in stops you having to land the first note the instant you press REC. The metronome then gives you a pulse to play against. Sampling has its own count-in, covered in Give yourself a count-in.

To choose a count-in, hold SHIFT and press PAD 10. Each press moves on to the next setting, in the order below.

Program steps with TR-REC

TR-REC swaps playing for placing. You pick a sample, then press pads to mark which steps it plays on, so nothing depends on your timing. That makes it a natural fit for drum patterns, and for any part you’d rather build than perform.

Start a new TR-REC pattern

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  2. Press REC. Every pad without a pattern blinks red.
  3. Press a blinking pad to choose where the pattern goes. The RECORD SETTING screen opens with the 404 in standby.
  4. Press REMAIN until the mode on the screen reads TR-REC. The button blinks in this mode.

Split a step into quick repeats

A SUBSTEP value cuts one step into two, three or four parts and decides which parts make a sound. All of them sounding gives you a rapid flutter inside a single step, which is great on hi-hats. With only one sounding, you can place a hit later in the step without having to play it there.

Use one

  1. In Program steps with TR-REC, check that MODE is TRIG and START is at 0%. Substeps aren’t available otherwise.

Tighten the timing after recording

If a pattern you played in has samples starting ahead of or behind the beat, you don’t have to record it again. Quantising moves those notes onto a rhythmic grid after the fact. You choose which samples it touches and which stretch of the pattern, so one sloppy part can be fixed while the rest keeps its feel.

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  2. Press PATTERN EDIT.
  3. Press the pad of the pattern you want to fix. The pattern edit screen opens.
  4. Press RECORD SETTING to open the quantize screen. If it doesn’t appear, press the button once more.

Cut a pattern down to size

Setting LOOP START and LENGTH in Change a pattern’s tempo, loop and length only changes what plays. To actually get rid of what you’re not using, there are two tools: CROP throws away everything outside the range, and DEL removes chosen pads from inside it.

Keep only the range with CROP

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  2. Press PATTERN EDIT.
  3. Press the pad of the pattern. The pattern edit screen opens.
  4. Use LOOP START and LENGTH to mark the range you want to keep.
  5. Press VALUE. A menu opens.
  6. Turn VALUE to CROP and press it. Everything outside the range is deleted.

Delete from inside the loop range

  1. On the pattern edit screen, hold DEL. The pads inside the loop range turn blue.
  2. Keep holding DEL and press the pad you want to remove. It turns bright blue.
  3. Keep holding DEL and press VALUE. The pad you picked is deleted. Roland only calls it a “pad (pattern)” and doesn’t say exactly which notes go, so listen back afterwards.

SP-404 Mk2 Beginner's Guide (Part 3): Patterns, Real Time Recording, TR-Rec Mode & Chaining

Part 3 covers real-time recording and layering, project and bank tempo, cropping and copying, bouncing, TR-REC and chains.

Switch pattern banks

Patterns are spread across ten banks, A to J, so you can keep the parts of a track together or keep whole ideas apart. The five bank buttons work just as they do for samples (Play a pad and switch banks).

With PATTERN SELECT lit, press a BANK button. Press the same button again to flip to its other bank. The button stays lit when you’re in banks A–E and blinks when you’re in banks F–J.

Banks aren’t walls. A chain can mix patterns from different banks, and you can copy or swap patterns between them.

From the community

  • To line a pattern bank up with its sample bank, go into record on the pattern bank you want: the 404 moves to the matching pad bank once recording starts. Otherwise PATTERN SELECT just flips between the last pattern bank and sample bank you visited. via NearTao on YouTube

String patterns into a chain

A pattern chain plays a list of patterns in the order you give it, so a whole arrangement can run without you touching a pad. One chain holds up to 16 patterns, and a project can store up to 16 chains.

Build a chain

  1. Record the patterns you want to use (Record a pattern as you play, Program steps with TR-REC).
  2. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  3. Hold HOLD and press a pad to choose a chain number from 1 to 16. The PATTERN CHAIN screen opens.
  4. Press pads to add patterns to the chain. To use a pattern from another bank, press its BANK button first.
  5. Press EXIT. The chain saves itself and you’re back on the PATTERN SELECT screen.

Editing a chain on the PATTERN CHAIN screen

  • Turn VALUE to move the cursor. New patterns can go in at the cursor position.
  • Press DEL to take out the pattern at the cursor.
  • An asterisk (*) at the top right shows the chain has been edited. Press SHIFT + DEL to undo those edits.

Press REMAIN on the same screen to turn repeat on or off, and the screen shows which of these applies. Roland’s manual is unclear on the rest: it heads its list of these settings with START/END and doesn’t say how to reach REPEAT Current, so try that button if REMAIN alone doesn’t get you there.

Repeat settings

On screenWhat plays
REPEAT AllThe whole chain, going back to the start each time it finishes.
REPEAT CurrentJust the current pattern, over and over. Its pad is lit pink.
REPEAT OffThe whole chain once, then playback ends.

Play a chain

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  2. Hold HOLD and press the pad for the chain number. The PATTERN CHAIN screen opens.
  3. Press SUB PAD to start the chain. Press it again to stop.
  4. Press EXIT to go back to the PATTERN SELECT screen.

A chain can become a sample in the same two ways as a single pattern. Turn a pattern into a sample explains which to choose. Bouncing a chain arrived in system 4.04.

Resample a chain as it plays

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  2. Press RESAMPLE.
  3. Press RECORD SETTING. The input setting screen opens.
  4. Turn CTRL 2 to set ROUTING to Mix.
  5. Press EXIT.
  6. Press an empty pad, which blinks red, to hold the new sample. It starts blinking purple and the screen shows Press Pad to START.
  7. Hold HOLD and press the pad for the chain number. The PATTERN CHAIN screen opens.
  8. Press SUB PAD. Sampling starts along with the chain. Press EXIT if you change your mind.
  9. Press REC to finish, and the new sample lands on that pad.

Bounce a chain

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  2. Press COPY.
  3. Hold HOLD and press the pad for the chain number, from 1 to 16.
  4. Press the pad that should receive the sample. Choose an empty one: bouncing a single pattern erases any sample already on the destination pad (Turn a pattern into a sample), so assume a chain does the same.
  5. Press COPY. The chain is converted and the sample is assigned to that pad.

Turn a pattern into a sample

A pattern is only instructions until you turn it into audio. Do that and the whole performance sits on one pad, ready to be treated like any other sample. There are two routes, and the question that decides between them is mostly whether you want effects in the result.

Bounce or resample?

How they differBounceResample
What you getAlways the entire pattern. As much as you let run. You decide when to stop.
EffectsLeft out. BUS 1–4 are bypassed for you.Included.
While it worksSilence. Long patterns can take some time. The pattern plays, so you hear what you’re capturing.

Choose a bounce when

  • You want a clean copy of the pattern, with room to add different effects later.
  • You want the whole thing and don’t need to listen as it converts.
  • You only want some of the pads: a bounce can be combined with the extraction described in Swap, copy, extract and delete patterns.

Choose a resample when

  • The effects are part of the sound and you want them in the sample.
  • You only want part of the pattern, and would rather stop by ear at the point you like.

Resample a pattern

  1. Press PATTERN SELECT.
  2. Press RESAMPLE.
  3. Press RECORD SETTING. The input setting screen opens.
  4. Turn CTRL 2 to set ROUTING to Mix.
  5. Press EXIT.
  6. Press a pad that’s blinking red. These are the empty pads, and this one receives the sample. The screen shows Press Pad to START, and pads holding a pattern blink blue.
  7. Press the pad of the pattern. Sampling starts as the pattern starts. Press EXIT if you change your mind.
  8. Press REC when you want to stop.

Good to know when resampling

  • With ROUTING set to ExtIn, the sample only takes what’s coming in from an external device. The pattern’s sound stays out of it, so you can capture yourself playing along with the pattern as a backing track.
  • The metronome follows Metronome:REC here, and SHIFT + PAD 9 turns it on or off (Get a count-in and a click).
  • More on resampling in general is in Resample what the 404 is playing.

Bounce a pattern

  1. With PATTERN SELECT lit, press COPY. The COPY screen opens.
  2. Press the pad of the pattern you want to convert.
  3. Press PATTERN SELECT. The destination on the screen changes to SAMPLE. Pads that already hold a sample glow dim blue, and empty ones blink blue.
  4. Press the pad that should receive the sample. To reach another bank, press its BANK button first. To reach another project, turn CTRL 3. Press EXIT if you change your mind.
  5. Press VALUE or COPY. The pattern is converted and the sample is assigned to that pad.

Swap, copy, extract and delete patterns

Sooner or later, the pattern you want is on the wrong pad, or you need a safe copy before trying something drastic. These jobs all happen with PATTERN SELECT lit, because the same buttons act on samples otherwise (Swap and copy pads and banks, Protect banks and delete samples).

Swap two patterns

  1. Stop the pattern if one is playing.
  2. Hold SHIFT and press PAD 5. The EXCHANGE screen opens.
  3. Press the two pads, one after the other. To swap across banks, press the other BANK button before pressing that pad. Press EXIT if you change your mind.
  4. Press VALUE or COPY. The two pads trade patterns.

Copy a pattern to another pad

  1. Press COPY. The COPY screen opens.
  2. Press the pad you’re copying from, then the pad you’re copying to. To reach another bank, press its BANK button before pressing the destination pad. To reach another project, turn CTRL 3. Press EXIT if you change your mind.
  3. Press VALUE or COPY. A pad with no sample assigned can be copied this way too.

Make a new pattern from just some of its pads

  1. Press COPY, then the pad of the source pattern, then the pad where the new pattern should go. As with a copy, you can press a BANK button or turn CTRL 3 to save to another bank or project, and press EXIT to back out.
  2. Press REMAIN. The pads this pattern uses glow dim white.
  3. Press the pads you want to keep. They turn full white.
  4. Press REMAIN.
  5. Press VALUE or COPY. The new pattern is saved with only those samples switched on.

That’s handy for pulling the drums out of a busy pattern. It also works with a bounce, as noted in Turn a pattern into a sample.

Copy a whole bank of patterns

  1. Stop the pattern if one is playing.
  2. Hold COPY and press EXIT. The COPY BANK screen opens.
  3. Press the BANK button of the bank you’re copying from.
  4. Turn VALUE clockwise to move the cursor.
  5. Press the BANK button of the bank you’re copying to.
  6. Press VALUE or COPY.

Protect a bank

  1. Press a BANK button to select the bank. For banks F–J, press it twice so that it blinks.
  2. Hold SHIFT and press COPY. A confirmation message appears. Press EXIT to back out.
  3. Turn VALUE to OK and press it.

A protected bank’s samples and patterns are locked: no copying, no overwriting through edits and no accidental deletion. It’s switched bank by bank and always covers both samples and patterns. Repeat the steps to lift it. See Protect banks and delete samples.

Delete a pattern

  1. Stop the pattern if one is playing.
  2. Press DEL. The DELETE screen opens.
  3. Press the pad holding the pattern. Press EXIT if you change your mind.
  4. Press VALUE or DEL.

Delete a whole bank of patterns

  1. Stop the pattern if one is playing.
  2. Hold DEL and press EXIT. The DELETE BANK screen opens.
  3. Press the BANK button of the bank to clear.
  4. Press VALUE.
