Chapter 8
Effects & mixing
Delay, reverb, chorus, compressor and the mixer pages.
Editing send FX and mixer pages
Beyond the six per-track pages, the Digitakt II has pattern-wide pages for its three send effects — delay, reverb and chorus — and for the mixer, which includes the master compressor. Every preset in a pattern shares one set of effect settings; each track only decides how much it sends, using DEL, REV and CHR on its FX page.

| SEND FX page 1 | FUNC + FX | Delay |
| SEND FX page 2 | FUNC + FX, then UP/DOWN | Reverb |
| SEND FX page 3 | FUNC + FX, then UP/DOWN | Chorus |
| MIXER page 1 | FUNC + MOD | Compressor |
| MIXER page 2 | FUNC + MOD, then UP/DOWN | Internal mixer page 1: tracks 1–8 |
| MIXER page 3 | FUNC + MOD, then UP/DOWN | Internal mixer page 2: tracks 9–16 |
| MIXER page 4 | FUNC + MOD four times | FX mixer |
| MIXER page 5 | FUNC + MOD, then UP/DOWN | External mixer — plus page 6 when DUAL is ON |
Edit an effect or mixer page
- Press FUNC + FX for the SEND FX pages, or FUNC + MOD for the MIXER pages.
- Use UP/DOWN to move between the sub-pages.
- Turn the DATA ENTRY knobs A–H to change parameters; the volume parameters use LEVEL/DATA.
- Save the pattern once you are happy with the result.
Key combinations
- FUNC + FX
- Opens the SEND FX pages (delay, reverb, chorus).
- FUNC + MOD
- Opens the MIXER pages, starting with the compressor.
- UP/DOWN
- Moves between sub-pages.SEND FX or MIXER pages
The compressor and master overdrive are master effects — see Sound architecture. Which tracks, inputs and effects pass through the compressor is set in the SETUP menu, and which reach the outputs in Audio routing. Since OS 1.02, the mixer pages show the page’s name rather than a track number.
Delay
The delay repeats whatever you send it and blends the echoes back in with the original. Its TIME is counted in 128th notes relative to the current BPM, so the repeats follow the tempo. Feed it from the DEL send on each track’s FX page, from the inputs on the External mixer, or from the Chorus.
TIMEDelay Time
Delay time relative to the current BPM, counted in 128th notes: 16 is a 1/8 note, 32 a 1/4 note. Hold FUNC while turning to jump between tempo-related values.
TIME settings and note values
| TIME | Note value |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1/128 |
| 2 | 1/64 |
| 2.67 | 1/48 (1/32T) |
| 3 | 1/64. |
| 4 | 1/32 |
| 5.33 | 1/24 (1/16T) |
| 6 | 1/32. |
| 8 | 1/16 |
| 10.67 | 1/12 (1/8T) |
| 12 | 1/16. |
| 16 | 1/8 |
| 21.33 | 1/6 (1/4T) |
| 24 | 1/8. |
| 32 | 1/4 |
| 42.67 | 1/3 (1/2T) |
| 48 | 1/4. |
| 64 | 1/2 |
| 96 | 1/2. |
| 128 | 1 |
In the table, T marks triplet values and a trailing dot marks dotted values.
Ping-pong (X)
| Setting | Behaviour | What WID does |
|---|---|---|
| OFF | You place the delay signal in the stereo field yourself | Sets the position |
| ON | Repeats alternate between left and right | Sets the amount of panning |
Key combinations
- FUNC + FX
- Opens SEND FX page 1, the delay.
- Hold FUNC + turn the TIME knob
- Jumps the delay time between tempo-related settings.SEND FX page 1
Reverb
The reverb gives sounds a sense of space, from small rooms to huge halls. DEC sets the size of the space, FREQ and GAIN decide how bright or muffled the tail is, and HPF and LPF trim the audio before it enters the reverb.
PREPre-delay
Pre-delay time of the reverb.
The reverb is fed by the REV send on each track’s FX page, by the REV sends on the Delay and Chorus pages, and by the inputs on the External mixer.
Key combinations
- FUNC + FX, then UP/DOWN
- Opens SEND FX page 2, the reverb.
Chorus
Use the chorus to widen sounds, strengthen the stereo image or add gentle movement. DPTH and SPD set the depth and speed of the chorus’s own LFO modulation, and WDTH sets the stereo width.
DPTHDepth
Depth of the chorus’s LFO modulation.
HPF filters the signal on its way into the chorus. DEL and REV pass the wet chorus signal on to the Delay and Reverb, so you can chain the effects. The chorus is fed by the CHR send on each track’s FX page and by the inputs on the External mixer.
Key combinations
- FUNC + FX, then UP/DOWN
- Opens SEND FX page 3, the chorus.
Compressor
The compressor is a master effect that narrows the dynamic range by turning loud sounds down relative to quiet ones. Beyond taming peaks, its sidechain lets one sound — a kick, say — pull the rest of the mix down every time it plays, and DRY/WET MIX blends in parallel compression. A bar on the left of the screen shows how much compression is happening.
The page has eight compressor parameters on the DATA ENTRY knobs, plus VOL (pattern volume) on LEVEL/DATA.
THRThreshold
Compressor threshold. The lower it is, the more of the signal gets compressed.
SCS — sidechain sources
| SCS | The compressor listens to |
|---|---|
| COMP MIX | All tracks routed to the compressor |
| NOT COMP | All tracks not routed to the compressor |
| MAIN | The sound sent to the Main L/R outputs |
| TRK1–16 | The sound from one audio track |
| IN LR | The IN L/R inputs — only when DUAL is OFF |
| IN L | INPUT L — only when DUAL is ON |
| IN R | INPUT R — only when DUAL is ON |
SCF — sidechain filter
| SCF | Filter | Compressor reacts | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Negative | Low-pass | Mostly to bass frequencies | A characteristic pumping sound |
| Positive | High-pass | Less to bass frequencies | Avoiding pumping |
Make the mix pump with the kick
- Press FUNC + MOD to open the compressor (MIXER page 1).
- Set SCS to the kick’s track — for example TRK1.
- Turn SCF to a negative value so the compressor reacts mostly to bass.
- Lower THR and raise RAT until the compression bar moves in time with the kick; shape the pump with ATK and REL.
- Use MUP to win back the level lost to compression, and DRY/WET MIX to blend in the uncompressed signal if needed.
Signal flow
- Audio path: input → gain reduction → makeup gain (MUP) → dry/wet mix → output L/R.
- Control path: sidechain source (SCS) → sidechain filter (SCF, high- or low-pass) → dynamics computer (ATK, REL) → control signal that sets the gain reduction.
Key combinations
- FUNC + MOD
- Opens MIXER page 1, the compressor.

Internal mixer
The two internal mixer pages are where you balance the tracks against each other. Page 1 (MIXER page 2) holds the TRACK LEVEL of tracks 1–8 and page 2 (MIXER page 3) that of tracks 9–16 — for audio tracks only, since MIDI tracks make no sound. VOL on both pages sets the pattern’s overall level.
TRACK LEVELTrack level, tracks 1–8
The TRACK LEVEL parameter of tracks 1–8, for those that are audio tracks. Track level cannot be parameter-locked; use VOL on the AMP page for that.
TRACK LEVELTrack level, tracks 9–16
The TRACK LEVEL parameter of tracks 9–16, for those that are not MIDI tracks. Track level cannot be parameter-locked; use VOL on the AMP page for that.
Use VOL (pattern volume) to even out levels between patterns. It is saved with the kit and set with LEVEL/DATA.
Key combinations
- FUNC + MOD, then UP/DOWN
- Opens MIXER pages 2 and 3, the internal mixer.
FX mixer
The FX mixer sets how loud each send effect returns into the mix, and how much master overdrive is applied across the kit’s audio tracks. It is the fourth MIXER page.
VOLPattern Volume
Overall level of the pattern, for balancing patterns against each other. Saved with the kit; set it with LEVEL/DATA.
CHR, DEL and REV here are the effects’ master volumes. They are separate from the VOL parameter on each effect’s own SEND FX page — see Delay, Reverb and Chorus.
Key combinations
- FUNC + MOD (press four times)
- Opens MIXER page 4, the FX mixer.
External mixer
The external mixer lets you process audio arriving at the IN L/R inputs with the Digitakt II’s mixer and effects. Set the input level and stereo placement, then send it to the chorus, delay and reverb.
IN LRIn Level
Level of the audio coming in at IN L/R.
DUAL — stereo or two mono inputs
| DUAL | Inputs | Mixer pages | Stereo control | Compressor sidechain options |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OFF | One stereo input | MIXER page 5 controls both inputs | BAL | IN LR |
| ON | Two separate mono inputs | Page 5 controls INPUT L; an extra page 6 controls INPUT R | PAN | IN L, IN R |
DUAL also changes the source options of the sample recorder — see The SAMPLING menu — and which input options the Compressor offers as a sidechain source.
Key combinations
- FUNC + MOD, then UP/DOWN
- Opens MIXER page 5, the external mixer (and page 6 with DUAL on).
- STOP + STOP
- Stops all tracks with a short fade-out of the send effects; trig an audio track afterwards to reactivate the external mixer’s effects.Sequencer stopped
