Front panel tour

Here’s every key, knob and light on the front panel, numbered as in the manual. Most keys do two jobs: the one printed on the key, and a secondary function printed in orange that you reach by holding FUNC. Click around the panel below, or scan the table.

Tap any key or knob. Press FUNC to light up the secondary functions.

Navigating the screen

The screen shows everything you need while you play and edit. Learn its layout and the handful of keys that move through menus, and every other part of the Digitakt II works the same way.

What the main screen shows

  • The active bank and pattern, and the pattern’s name.
  • The TRIG mode in use — see TRIG mode.
  • The current tempo.
  • Eight track parameters with their current values. They sit in the same positions as the DATA ENTRY knobs A–H below the screen, and change depending on what you’re doing.
  • A page indicator showing how many pages the current parameter section has and which one you’re on.
  • The active track’s main level, which you change with LEVEL/DATA.
  • The active track, and its type: SMP for an audio track or MID for a MIDI track.

Moving around menus

ARROW
Moves through menus and sub-menus.
YES

Turn LEVEL/DATA to scroll quickly through long menus and lists — see Quick scrolling.

2.3BasicsManual §6.2 p.18, §6.2.1 p.19, §6.2.2 p.19

Editing parameters

The eight DATA ENTRY knobs A–H change the track parameters shown on screen, and each parameter’s position on the screen matches where its knob sits on the panel. A few modifiers let you move faster, snap back to defaults, or push one change across every audio track in the pattern.

The basics

  • Turn a knob for normal steps; press it down while turning to move in bigger steps and sweep the whole range quickly.
  • Some screens print the knob letter next to a parameter — for example (E) in the PAGE SETUP menu — so you know which knob to reach for.
  • Hold a PARAMETER key to see the values of every parameter on that page at once.

Key combinations

Press DATA ENTRY knob + NO
Resets that parameter to its default value.
PARAMETER + PLAY
Resets every parameter on the selected page to its default value.
Hold PARAMETER
Shows the values of all parameters on that page.
FUNC + turn DATA ENTRY knob

Hold TRK + turn DATA ENTRY knob

Hold TRK + NO
Reverts the control all change — press NO before you release TRK.While using control all
Parameter value jump
Hold FUNC while you edit certain parameters and the value leaps to sensible positions instead of moving one step: NOTE jumps in octaves, and the delay time jumps between BPM-related settings.
Control all
Hold TRK and change a parameter to set it on all the audio tracks in the pattern at once. Changed your mind? Press NO while you’re still holding TRK.
2.4BasicsManual §6.3 p.19

Quick scrolling

Preset, sample and settings lists can get long. Rather than stepping one line at a time with the arrow keys, spin a knob or jump a whole page at once.

  • Turn LEVEL/DATA to scroll through a menu or list.
  • Hold FUNC and press UP or DOWN to move the cursor a full menu page in that direction.

Key combinations

FUNC + UP/DOWN
Moves the cursor one menu page up or down.In menus and lists

Copy, clear and paste

Copying saves you rebuilding the same thing twice, and clearing gives you a fresh start. The same three shortcuts work in many places — patterns, tracks, trigs and the naming screen among them — so learn them once and use them everywhere.

Key combinations

FUNC + RECORD
Copies the selected item.
FUNC + STOP
Pastes the copied item.
FUNC + PLAY
Clears the selected item.
FUNC + STOP
Undoes the paste.Pressed again after pasting
FUNC + PLAY
Undoes the clear.Pressed again after clearing

Exactly what you can copy depends on the screen you’re on. The sequencer versions — patterns, tracks, pages and trigs — are covered in Copying, pasting and clearing in the sequencer, and the naming screen supports them too (Naming things).

2.6BasicsManual §6.5 p.19, §6.5.1 p.19

Naming things

Whenever you save a sample, preset, project or anything else that needs a name, the same NAMING screen appears. It works identically everywhere, so a couple of shortcuts make naming quick.

Type a name

  1. Press LEFT or RIGHT to move to the character you want to change.
  2. Turn LEVEL/DATA or press UP/DOWN to choose the character.
  3. Repeat for each position you want to change.

  1. On the NAMING screen, press and hold FUNC. A pop-up shows every available letter, digit and symbol.
  2. Keep holding FUNC and use the ARROW keys to highlight the character you want.
  3. Release FUNC to add it to the name.

Trig keys, knobs and key behaviour

The 16 TRIG keys are the busiest controls on the Digitakt II: they play sounds, place steps, pick tracks, patterns and songs, and their lights tell you what’s happening. The knobs come in two kinds that behave differently, and some key groups only ever let one key be active.

What the TRIG keys do

  • Play the matching track from the active pattern when you aren’t recording into the sequencer.
  • Place and remove trigs in GRID RECORDING mode (GRID RECORDING mode).
  • Select a track, pattern or song together with TRK, PTN or SONG.
  • Become a keyboard in KEYBOARD mode (KEYBOARD mode and keyboard setup), mute switches in MUTE mode (MUTE mode), or velocity, retrig, slice and preset pads in the other TRIG modes (TRIG mode).
  • Light up to show placed trigs and the selected bank and track.

2.8IntermediateManual §8.5 p.25, §8.5.1 p.25, §8.5.2 p.26

KEYBOARD mode and keyboard setup

KEYBOARD mode turns the TRIG keys into a small keyboard for the active track, so you can play a sample melodically or send notes from a MIDI track. KEYBOARD SETUP then lets you lock the keys to a scale, so everything you press fits the music.

It’s one of several modes that decide what the TRIG keys do when you press them — the others are MUTE mode (MUTE mode) and the TRIG modes (TRIG mode).

Play a track from the TRIG keys

  1. Press TRK + one of TRIG 1–16 to choose the track you want to play.
  2. Press KEYBOARD. With KB SCALE set to CHROMATIC and KB FOLD off, the keys light up like one octave of a piano; only the lit keys play.
  3. Play the TRIG keys. TRIG 9 to TRIG 16 span one octave.
  4. Press KEYBOARD + UP or DOWN to shift the keyboard an octave at a time.
  5. Press KEYBOARD again to leave KEYBOARD mode.

Good to know

  • On an audio track the keys play the preset at different pitches; on a MIDI track they send MIDI notes.
  • The full playable range is C0–G10, a little over ten octaves. You can transpose up to 4 octaves above and 5 octaves below the middle octave.
  • Set U/D KEY MODE to KB OCT (The PERSONALIZE menu) and plain UP/DOWN transposes while you’re in KEYBOARD mode. This option arrived in OS 1.01.
  • Notes you play can be recorded in LIVE RECORDING mode (LIVE RECORDING mode).
  • The octave you’ve shifted to isn’t stored per pattern — it stays wherever you last left it.

How KB FOLD lays out the notes

  • TRIG 9 plays the lowest note for the selected octave, root note and scale.
  • The scale climbs from there to TRIG 16, then carries on upwards across TRIG 1–8.
  • If the scale has fewer than eight notes per octave, the leftover keys at the end of the lower row play the same notes as the first keys of the upper row.
  • Blue TRIG keys mark notes that are one or more octaves apart.

Keyboard scales

A keyboard scale limits the TRIG keys in KEYBOARD mode to the notes of one scale, so you can play melodies — or send them from a MIDI track — without hitting a wrong note. Choose it with KB SCALE and set its key with ROOT NOTE in the KEYBOARD SETUP menu. The same scale can also guide the NOTE knob on the TRIG page.

Choose a scale

  1. Select the track with TRK + TRIG 1–16.
  2. Press FUNC + KEYBOARD to open the KEYBOARD SETUP menu.
  3. Turn the DATA ENTRY knobs to set KB SCALE and ROOT NOTE. Switch KB FOLD on if you want a scale note on every TRIG key.
  4. Press NO to close the menu. In KEYBOARD mode, only the notes of the scale are now playable.

How the scale is used

  • With CHROMATIC selected and KB FOLD off, the keys light up like one piano octave and only the lit keys play. Any other scale leaves only its own notes playable.
  • With KB FOLD on, the scale climbs from TRIG 9 across all 16 keys, and notes from external MIDI devices follow the folded layout too — see KEYBOARD mode and keyboard setup.
  • The scale, root note and fold settings are saved with the active pattern.
  • In the PRESET/KIT menu’s LOAD list, press KEYBOARD and play the TRIG keys to preview a preset in the selected scale (The PRESET/KIT menu).

NOTE on TRIG page 1 can follow the scale too. The NOTE PARAM setting in The PERSONALIZE menu, added in OS 1.02, decides which way round A works:

MUTE mode

MUTE mode lets you drop tracks in and out while a pattern plays — the core move for building up and breaking down a live arrangement. Unlike KEYBOARD mode, it doesn’t matter which track is active: all 16 tracks are on the TRIG keys at once.

Mute and unmute tracks

  1. Press FUNC + TRK to enter MUTE mode.
  2. Press a TRIG key to mute its track. Press it again to unmute. Lit keys are playing; unlit keys are muted.
