Learn the instrument one concept at a time
The Synthesis Fundamentals bank is a twelve-step learning path where each preset isolates exactly one idea: a raw saw, then the same saw filtered, then the filter moved by an envelope, then resonance, pulse width, detune, sub layering, envelope speed, and the LFO routed to pitch versus loudness — the last pair being the same modulator with a different destination, which is the whole modulation lesson in two presets. Flip through them in order with the description line open and you will have covered more synthesis than most manuals manage.

What is subtractive synthesis?
You start with a bright waveform that contains lots of harmonics — a sawtooth or square — and subtract from it with a filter, while envelopes move loudness and the filter over time. That architecture is most classic synthesisers in one sentence, and it is exactly what this tool does: two oscillators plus sub and noise, into a resonant filter, shaped by two envelopes and an LFO. Does the audio leave my device?
No. Sound is generated by the Web Audio API in your browser, presets you save live in your browser storage, and a shared patch is encoded entirely inside the URL itself — around seventy characters of it. There is no upload, no account, and no audio path that touches a server.
Can I play it with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes, in browsers with Web MIDI (Chrome and Edge, and Firefox behind a flag): click Connect MIDI and play — note velocity, pitch bend, the mod wheel (routed to filter brightness) and the sustain pedal all work. Safari has no Web MIDI, so there the QWERTY mapping and on-screen keyboard take over.
Can I use sounds I make commercially?
Yes. The presets are ordinary synthesis settings, what you play is yours, and the tool claims no rights over anything you record with it.
Why does it ask me to enable audio first?
Browsers block pages from making sound until you interact with them — a sensible autoplay rule. The one click creates the audio engine inside that gesture; after it, everything is instant.
