Electronic music thinks in modes, not textbook keys

Most harmony tutorials live in classical major: I–IV–V and a dominant chord pulling home. Club music largely doesn’t. Melodic techno and trance sit in natural minor orbiting i, VI and VII; liquid drum & bass borrows dorian’s brighter minor; deep house vamps on m7 and m9 chords two at a time; ambient stretches lydian and slow modal mixture across whole bars. That is why this generator treats minor modes as first-class citizens and gives each genre its own transition grammar — the probability that VI moves to VII is simply different in trance than it is in lo-fi, and the chord palettes differ with it.

Voice leading is the difference you can hear

Voice leading is the craft of moving each note in a chord to the nearest sensible note in the next one, instead of jumping whole shapes around the keyboard. Played badly, Fm to Db is a four-semitone lurch; voiced well, two notes stay where they are and the others move by a tone. Almost every chord generator online ignores this and exports stacked root-position blocks. This one solves the voicing across the whole progression — minimising movement, avoiding parallel octaves in the outer voices, choosing inversions on purpose — and the piano-roll strip under each card shows you exactly what it chose. Can I use these progressions commercially?

Yes. Chord progressions are not copyrightable — they are building blocks, like scales or drum patterns, and the same handful of progressions underpins thousands of released tracks. The MIDI file this tool generates is yours to use in any context, commercial or otherwise, with no attribution required. What copyright protects is a finished composition — melody, lyrics, the specific recorded performance — not the harmonic skeleton underneath it.

What DAWs accept the MIDI file?

All of them. The export is a Standard MIDI File (Type 1, 480 PPQ), the most widely supported music interchange format that exists — Ableton Live, Logic, FL Studio, Cubase, Bitwig, Reason, Studio One, Reaper, Renoise and hardware workstations all read it. It carries two tracks (chords and bass), the tempo you set, and a key signature, so it drops onto your timeline at the right speed with the voicings exactly as you auditioned them. In Live and most DAWs you can simply drag the file into an arrangement.

What does the complexity slider change?

It gates how much harmonic colour the generator is allowed. At 1 you get triads with the occasional sus2 or add9 — clean, safe, and right for trance and big-room melodic techno. At 2, sevenths, sus and add9 chords become the standard vocabulary. At 3 the generator reaches for extensions (9ths, 11ths, 13ths), inversions with the bass following chord tones, and borrowed chords: modal mixture, secondary dominants, and in the jazzier genres the occasional tritone substitution.

Why do the chords sound smoother than other generators?

Voice leading. Most generators pick chord symbols and stack every chord in root position, so the whole shape lurches up and down with the root — that is the “MIDI pack” sound. This tool voices each chord by searching the inversions and octave placements that minimise how far each individual voice moves from the previous chord, while avoiding parallel octaves between the outer voices and keeping every voice in a sensible register. Adjacent chords typically share tones and move voices by a semitone or two, which is what your ear reads as smooth — and the exported MIDI keeps those exact voicings.
