— Why one algorithm makes so many grooves
Most of the world's rhythms are already Euclidean
Take k hits, spread them as evenly as possible across n steps — that's the whole idea, and the arithmetic doing the spreading is Euclid's greatest-common-divisor algorithm wearing a drum machine's clothes. Godfried Toussaint's observation, in his 2005 paper, is the reason this tool exists: E(3,8) is the Cuban tresillo. E(5,8) is the cinquillo. E(7,12) is the bell pattern that anchors West African 12/8 music. One rule, applied at different densities, keeps landing on rhythms that people spent centuries arriving at by ear.
Why it works so well in techno
Euclidean patterns are even without being square. Set a kick to E(4,16) and it's four on the floor; set a hat to E(7,16) over it and the two densities interlock into something that pushes. Give one lane 12 steps against another's 16 and they drift apart and realign over three bars — polymeter you can watch happening on the rings. The accent control runs a second Euclidean distribution across the hits themselves, which is where a static loop starts to groove.
Rotation changes feel, not density
The same pattern started from a different step is a different rhythm — E(2,16) is two hits on the one and the three until you rotate it by four, and suddenly it's a backbeat clap. What is a Euclidean rhythm?
A Euclidean rhythm E(k,n) spreads k hits as evenly as possible across n steps, computed with the same arithmetic as Euclid’s greatest-common-divisor algorithm. Godfried Toussaint noticed that this one rule reproduces a striking number of traditional rhythms: E(3,8) is the Cuban tresillo, E(5,8) the cinquillo, E(7,12) the West African 12/8 bell pattern. This tool generates them with Bjorklund’s algorithm and lets you rotate, accent and combine up to four of them.
Can I use the MIDI commercially?
Yes. Rhythms and drum patterns are not copyrightable, the files are generated entirely in your browser, and nothing about this tool claims any rights over what you make with it. Release away.
Why do my lanes drift apart?
That’s polymeter, and it’s by design: lanes with different step counts share one clock but cycle at their own period, so a 12-step lane rotates against a 16-step lane until they realign — the per-ring markers on the circle show exactly where each lane is. Set every lane to the same step count if you want them locked together.
What drum sounds does the MIDI map to?
General MIDI drum notes on channel 10: kick 36, clap 38 (or 39 with the toggle), closed hat 42, perc 63. The note numbers are shown under the export row, so dropping the file onto any drum rack and remapping takes seconds.
